Management Quality (7/10)
Bottom line: Amon and Palkhiwala have hit or beaten the midpoint of their quarterly revenue and non-GAAP EPS guidance in 12 of 12 quarters (24 of 24 data points) going back to FQ4'23, and the FY24 Investor Day diversification promises are mostly on track, led by auto. The score stops at 7 because three things slipped: IoT is running well behind the growth its FY29 target needs, the QCT margin is below its own 30% long-term bar, and two recent forward statements were walked back within one to two quarters (FY26 growth, Apple FY27). On top of that, insiders sold more than $10M over the last 12 months and bought nothing. The FQ3'26 call raised the bar sharply: FY29 non-handset went from $22B to $40B, the auto exit run rate from $6B to $7B, and data center is now $5B in FY27. With a 3-year record behind them, that raise is believable, but they now have to deliver it.

- The pattern is "beat," not "beat and raise," right now. The midpoint beat on EPS has shrunk from +15.6% (FQ1'25) to +0.5% (FQ3'26). The guided revenue midpoint has also moved down: FQ3'26 was guided to $9.6B against $10.37B a year earlier (about -7% y/y), and FQ4'26 to $10.1B against $11.27B (about -10% y/y). Management blames the memory shortage, as HBM reallocation squeezes handset DRAM (FQ1'26 and FQ2'26 calls), and it called the handset guides correctly: it guided ~$6B and delivered $6.02B, then guided ~$4.9B and delivered $5.09B.
- Daloopa tags the quarterly revenue guide as GAAP. GAAP and non-GAAP revenue differ only in FQ2'25 (QSI), so I compared GAAP to GAAP for that quarter.
| Promise (Source) | Timeframe | Actual Result | Hit/Miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined auto + IoT revenue of $22B (2024 Investor Day; reiterated FQ1'25 to FQ4'25 calls; Daloopa target) | FY29 | Base is FY24 $2.91B + $5.42B = $8.33B, so the target needs a ~21% CAGR. FY25 came in at $10.57B (+27%). FY26 YTD is +20% y/y. Target raised to $24B | Hit (on track) |
| Auto revenue of $8B (Investor Day; FQ2'25 call) | FY29 | FQ3'26 auto $1.59B, +61% y/y, an annualized $6.35B. Exit FY26 run-rate guide raised to ~$7B. FY29 target raised to $10B | Hit (ahead) |
| IoT revenue of $14B (FQ4'25 call; Investor Day) | FY29 | Needs ~21% CAGR from FY24 $5.42B. FY25 $6.62B (+22%) was on pace, but FY26 YTD is only +9% ($1.69B, $1.73B, $1.83B) and FQ4 is guided ~flat. Target held at $14B | Miss (behind trajectory) |
| FY25 auto ~+35% and IoT ~+20% (FQ3'25 call, Jul 2025) | FY25 | Auto $3.96B, +36%. IoT $6.62B, +22% | Hit |
| FY25 revenue +12% and non-GAAP EPS +16% at guide midpoint (FQ3'25 call) | FY25 | Revenue $44.14B vs $38.94B, +13.3%. EPS $12.03 vs $10.22, +17.7% | Hit |
| Auto revenue reaches $1B in FQ4'25 (FQ3'25 call) | FQ4'25 | $1.05B | Hit |
| Return 100% of FCF in FY25 (FQ2'25 call) | FY25 | FCF of $14.01B OCF minus $1.19B capex = $12.82B. Capital returned $12.60B, or 98% | Hit |
| Arm license covers Oryon custom CPUs (FQ4'24 call) | FY25 | Dec 2024 jury verdict in Qualcomm's favor. Arm withdrew the breach notice (FQ1'25 call) | Hit |
| QCT EBT margin of ~30% long term (target cited on FQ1'26 call) | Ongoing | 32% in FQ1'25, then 27% and 26%. FQ4'26 guided to 23% to 25% (input costs, data center OpEx) | Miss (behind) |
| Windows PC revenue of $4B, ~12% share (Investor Day; FQ1'25 and FQ2'25 calls) | FY29 | PC revenue not disclosed, and PC was not a headline at the 2026 Investor Day | Unverifiable (excluded) |
| XR revenue of $2B (FQ2'25 call) | FY29 | Not disclosed. Management says smart glasses are "exceeding expectations" | Unverifiable (excluded) |
| Data center revenue starts in FY28 (FQ3'25 call) | FY28 | Pulled forward to FY27 (FQ4'25 call), now guided at $5B FY27 and $15B FY29. Custom-silicon revenue starts FQ1'27 | Pending (timeline improved) |
| Recent (fewer than 4 quarters old): Alphawave closes in CQ1'26 (FQ4'25 call) | CQ1'26 | Closed and in the FQ2'26 OpEx guide | Hit |
| Recent: revenue grows from FQ1'26 through the rest of FY26 (FQ4'25 call) | FY26 | FQ2'26 -2.2% y/y and FQ3'26 -4.0% y/y. FQ4'26 guided about -10% y/y | Miss |
| Recent: Apple FY27 product revenue "a little over $2B" (FQ2'26 call) | FY27 | Cut on the FQ3'26 call. Share is now "materially less than 20%," and revenue will be below the >$2B guide | Miss |
| Recent: segment guides: handsets ~$6B and ~$4.9B; auto >35% and ~50% y/y growth (FQ1'26 and FQ2'26 calls) | FQ2'26, FQ3'26 | Handsets $6.02B and $5.09B. Auto $1.33B, +38%, and $1.59B, +61% | Hit (4 of 4) |
Hit rate
- Strategic promises 4+ quarters old: 7 of 9 verifiable = 78%.
- Quarterly revenue/EPS guidance: 24 of 24 at or above midpoint over 12 quarters = 100%.
- Combined, 4+ quarters old: 31 of 33 = 94%.
- Recent promises: 5 of 7 (71%), so recent execution is weaker. Both misses (the FY26 growth path and Apple FY27) came from externally driven guidance that management could not control (the memory shortage and Apple's modem insourcing). They are still credibility dings.
- Leadership: Cristiano Amon has been CEO since June 2021. Akash Palkhiwala has been CFO since 2019 and added COO in January 2024, an expansion of his role rather than a change (Qualcomm IR). There has been no CEO or CFO change in the last 2 years, and both have been at the company for 20+ years.
| Red flag | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| CEO/CFO change in last 2 years | No | Amon CEO since 2021. Palkhiwala CFO since 2019 (COO added Jan 2024) |
| Guidance withdrawn or lowered substantially | No (soft flag) | No guide withdrawn and no quarterly guide missed. Apple FY27 was cut from ">$2B" to below that within one quarter, worth roughly 1% to 2% of revenue, so not substantial. The FY26 growth path also reversed. Watch item |
| Restatement | No | All Daloopa series pulled show restated = false |
| Insider selling >$10M in 12 months, no buying | Yes (-1) | About $48.4M of insider sales over the trailing 12 months and $0 of buys (InsiderSet). This includes Amon's 150k-share sale (~$24.8M) on Oct 1, 2025 and 10k-share sales on Sep 21 and Sep 25, 2026 (SEC Form 4), plus Palkhiwala sales. All were under 10b5-1 plans |
| Revenue up while FCF down 3+ quarters | No | FCF fell in FQ2'26 ($1.92B vs $2.34B) and FQ3'26 ($0.50B = $991M OCF minus $496M capex, vs $2.58B), but revenue also fell in those quarters. FQ1'26 FCF rose to $4.42B ($4.97B minus $549M). The FQ3'26 FCF collapse is a watch item |
| Failed or value-destroying M&A | No | Nuvia (2021): its Oryon CPU now spans PC, auto and data center, and Qualcomm won the Arm case. Autotalks (2025): folded into auto, which grew +61% in FQ3'26. Arduino (FQ4'25): small, expands developer reach to 30M users. Alphawave (~$2.4B, closed CQ1'26): it is too early to judge, but custom-silicon revenue starts FQ1'27 and there has been no impairment. FY26 YTD acquisition spend is $1.57B |
| Debt growing faster than revenue 3+ quarters | No (2 quarters) | Total debt of $2.49B ST + $12.78B LT = $15.27B, up ~3% to 4% y/y in FQ2'26 and FQ3'26 while revenue declined. In earlier quarters debt was flat at ~$14.8B while revenue grew. Daloopa has no ST debt tag for FQ3'25 to FQ1'26 |
Red flag count: 1. There is also one soft flag on guidance credibility.
- What changed in FQ3'26 is management raising its own bar while the core business weakens. Combined auto + IoT growth has accelerated from +11% y/y in FQ1'26 to +20% in FQ2'26 and +28% in FQ3'26, driven by auto at +61%. Over the same period, handsets fell to $5.09B and total revenue fell 4% y/y.
- The new targets are much bigger. FY29 non-handset is now $40B, with data center at $15B. Management guides non-handset growth above 60% in FY27, enough to replace all FY26 Apple revenue.
- The track record supports taking the targets seriously, with limits. Management has consistently delivered on quarterly guides and on the auto targets, so the targets deserve weight. That is the "management is contrarian" setup (street consensus is only Hold).
- But data center is a new market with no revenue yet. IoT, the other half of the original target, is already running behind. The next three proof points are the FQ1'27 data center revenue start, the FY27 auto run rate tracking toward ~$7B or more, and IoT reaccelerating from +9%.
Assessment: I score management quality 7 of 10, which is the 7-8 rubric band: a stable 5-year CEO/CFO pairing, 100% quarterly guidance accuracy over three years, 94% on promises 4+ quarters old, and one red flag. I hold it at the bottom of the band rather than 8 for four reasons:
- Quarterly beats have shrunk to almost nothing (+0.5% on EPS in FQ3'26).
- Two forward statements were walked back in the last three quarters (the FY26 growth path and Apple FY27).
- IoT is growing 9% against the ~21% its FY29 target needs, and the QCT margin is 26% against its 30% bar.
- Insiders sold about $48M over 12 months and bought nothing.
For the AI-reacceleration thesis, this is a team that has earned the right to be believed on auto, and its decision to nearly double the FY29 non-handset target on the FQ3'26 call is the most important management signal this year. The FY27 data center ramp ($5B from zero) is where that credibility gets tested.
